Hindi, India's national language
The name is derived from Hindustan, which is the land of the Hindus.
Due to its diverse region and prominent cultural history, Hindi is one of the oldest languages in the world, dating back at least 5,000 years. Hindu scriptures like the Mahabharata and the Veda speak of a once unified "Hindustan". There are also non-mythological sources that testify to this unity, including the writings of Kautilya, Asoka, and other ancient Indian thinkers.
The script, called Devanagari, appeared in the 1st century AD, and spread widely in the area of South Asia that is now called Hindi belt, alongside the grammar of Prakrit, the predecessor language. It was from South Asia that the Islamic Golden Age spread, enriching Hindi with numerous words from Arabic. With the advent of the British Empire, large parts of India were consolidated as the present-day state of Maharashtra (the Marathi-speaking region of India) under Maratha rule. The peninsular region of Hindi belt was ruled by the Marathas (1736–1943) and the British (1858–1947).
Hindi was officially declared the national language of India in 1982 by the Government of India. After the independence of India from the British Raj, Hindi was imposed as the official language of the newly formed state of India, and was made the official language of union territories on 20 January 1966.
The Hindi language is an Indo-Aryan language belonging to the Indo-European family of languages and is generally spoken in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. It is spoken as a first language by 65-70% of the Indian population and is the most widely spoken Indian language, making it the fifth most widely spoken language in the world. Hindi is the official and national language of India.
