With Blanchett and Gunadttir, we’re finally in the presence of a dynamic, haunting musical work of the utmost intensity: luminous and endless, a film that didn’t need to exist, and a performance that makes that fact clear beyond all doubt.
Here’s another little chink in the armor: The movie has a bit of a funny streak. As much as its story is about fearlessness and clarity — about the thrill of standing ready for the possibilities before you — it has the feel of a period drama. The first movie is, after all, set during the Nazi occupation of the country. The second is set during the Korean War.
Though the acting is top-notch, the story-telling seems still a bit too big for the screen. This is a movie whose best moments come from watching Blanchett’s face as she listens to her cello; it’s a movie in which we never quite hear the characters say anything at all beyond, “Great, Blanchett!”
Still, Blanchett is transcendent here, an actress who is equally passionate about stage acting and cinematic acting. The music, while often positively ravishing, sometimes swells with a horror movie melodrama that doesn’t gel with the period setting.
